Director: George A. Romero
Writer: George A. Romero
2009

For Romero fans, this film will satisfy their eager zombie palate, however you may find it hard to like if you aren’t into Romero’s zombie world. I for one am not a huge fan but I do like his first zombie features, and I appreciate and respect this film for what it is. Survival of the Dead follows one of the characters (Nicotine Crocket) we saw in Diary of the Dead (the army guy who stopped the trailer and stole all the characters’ supplies). In this film, the zombie outbreak is widespread and Crocket and his group have sought refuge on a secluded island. Only problem is the island consists of two waring families, the O’Flynns and the Muldoons. Muldoon thinks the zombies can live among humans and be taught to eat something other than humans whereas O’Flynn thinks the way most people ought to – zombies must be killed, again.

Survival of the Dead was less scary and had a little more humour in it, which was a nice change. There were still hordes of zombies and in true Romero fashion, the zombies were killed in very unique ways. I did like this film and its subplot of the warring families a la Big Country, but overall this film was a bit weak. The zombies are biting just not as hard.
