Vengeance

Director: Johnnie To
Writer: Ka-Fai Wai
2009

Vengeance, is as the title explains, a film about vengeance. It stars French star Johnny Hallyday as a man seeking revenge on the men who brutally murdered his son-in-law, grandchildren and critically wounded his daughter. So, he enlists the help of three hit men (played by Anthony Wong, Ka Tung Lam and Suet Lam). What ensues is, in true Johnnie To fashion a brilliant heroic bloodshed ballet of bullets, wreaking havoc on the streets of Hong Kong. I really enjoyed this film, and if you are a fan of John Woo or Ringo Lam, you’ll love this film too because Johnnie To’s style is very much the same, and he does it well. The great thing about Vengeance is how Simon Yam is such a bad guy that even though he is not onscreen for long periods of time, whenever you see him you just hate him so much – he’s great at being bad. Vengeance is what you expect it to be, and that’s entertaining.
